TECHNOLOGY & BUSINESS — Apple Vision Pro remains one of the most technically impressive mixed-reality devices on the market, but its extraordinary price continues to make mainstream adoption difficult.

Apple raised the starting price of the Vision Pro to $3,699 in June 2026, up from its original $3,499 launch price. The increase came even after the headset had already struggled to move beyond a relatively small market of enthusiasts, developers and specialised professional users. 0

At those prices, the device competes for the kind of money consumers might otherwise spend on a high-end laptop, smartphone, television or multiple other pieces of technology.

That makes Vision Pro difficult to position as an everyday consumer product.


The Price Gap With Meta Is Huge

Apple's biggest problem is not simply that Vision Pro is expensive.

It is that competing headsets can cost dramatically less.

The Vision Pro's previous $3,499 starting price was already roughly seven times the $499.99 price of Meta's Quest 3. The gap has become even wider following Apple's latest price increase. 1

Apple has improved comfort with the newer Dual Knit Band, but the fundamental physical limitations of putting sophisticated displays, cameras, processors and sensors on a person's face remain.

Alternatively, Apple could eventually introduce a substantially cheaper and lighter product designed specifically for mainstream consumers.

The second strategy could have a much larger market opportunity.


Enterprise Could Be Vision Pro's Better Market

The high price is less problematic when the buyer is a company purchasing devices for specialised work.

Design, engineering, medical imaging, training and visualisation can justify expensive hardware when the device saves significant time or improves the quality of a professional workflow.

That makes enterprise and specialised applications more realistic targets for Vision Pro than expecting millions of ordinary consumers to purchase it.

Businesses have already shown resistance to the headset's price, however, meaning Apple still needs to demonstrate clear financial returns for professional deployments. 6

If Apple can eventually transfer Vision Pro's most important technologies into a lighter and cheaper product, the company's first-generation headset could become extremely important.

It would have served as a technological foundation for a much broader product category.

But that transition requires Apple to solve several difficult engineering problems involving displays, processors, cameras, battery life, heat, weight and manufacturing costs.

Apple created an impressive piece of technology and established a new product category for the company.

But calling it a mainstream success would be equally difficult to defend.
