TECHNOLOGY & PUBLIC SAFETY — China is putting robots to work on the streets, with a new generation of AI-powered traffic robots taking on some of the repetitive duties normally handled by human traffic officers.

In the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou, the T2 robot developed by SUPCON Information can monitor traffic, identify certain violations, issue warnings, provide directions and assist people who need to contact police. Unlike the fictional RoboCop, however, the machine has no weapons and no power to arrest anyone.


Meet China's Traffic Robocops

The T2 stands about 1.88 metres tall and weighs roughly 98 kilograms. Unlike many humanoid robots designed to walk like humans, it moves around on wheels.

Its equipment includes cameras, radar and onboard computing systems that allow it to monitor its surroundings and identify certain traffic violations.

The robot can detect riders without helmets, e-bikes carrying passengers, vehicles crossing marked stop lines and pedestrians crossing against traffic signals.


It Can Warn Drivers and Riders

When the system detects a violation, it can issue an audio warning rather than physically stopping the offender.

The idea is to provide an immediate reminder and encourage people to correct their behaviour without requiring a human officer to handle every minor violation.

The robot can also reproduce standard traffic-police gestures using its mechanical arms while synchronising its movements with traffic lights.


Fifteen Robots Have Been Deployed in Hangzhou

SUPCON has deployed fifteen T2 robots in Hangzhou since May as part of the pilot programme.

The company says the machines have issued more than 170,000 warnings and helped reduce certain violations, including helmetless riding and vehicles crossing stop lines, by more than 40 percent.

The Robots Do More Than Watch Traffic

The machines are not limited to identifying violations.
