HEALTH & AFRICA — The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has expanded to a sixth province, intensifying concerns over an epidemic that health officials describe as one of the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreaks the country has ever experienced.

Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya said the virus had reached Bas-Uele province after an infected man travelled from neighboring Haut-Uele and later died in the provincial capital, Buta. The development marks the first reported Ebola infection in Bas-Uele during the current outbreak.


A New Province Is Now Affected

Until the latest development, Ebola had been reported in five provinces: Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele and Tshopo.

The addition of Bas-Uele expands the geographical reach of the outbreak and creates new challenges for health authorities attempting to identify and monitor people who may have been exposed.

The infected man had travelled from Isiro in Haut-Uele to Buta in Bas-Uele before developing severe symptoms and dying. Authorities are now working to identify people who may have had contact with him.
