Papyrus transformed the ability to record information. Government records, religious texts, letters, medical knowledge, mathematics and literature could be preserved and transported more easily than information carved into stone.

Its influence extended far beyond Egypt. Papyrus became widely used throughout the Greco-Roman world, making it one of the most important information technologies of the ancient Mediterranean.

2. Advanced Ironworking in West Africa

Iron transformed human societies because it made stronger agricultural tools, weapons and other equipment possible.

Africa has some of the world's earliest evidence of sophisticated ironworking. Archaeological evidence from the Nok cultural area of present-day Nigeria indicates iron smelting at Taruga as early as around 400 BC, while other evidence points to ironworking in parts of West Africa even earlier.

Iron tools helped communities clear land, cultivate larger areas and develop more powerful political and economic systems.
