Honor has launched the G500 and G200 teleconverters for its new Magic 9 Pro Max smartphone. The G500 provides a 500mm-equivalent focal length for extreme-distance photography, while the smaller G200 reaches 200mm and is designed for easier everyday carrying. Both accessories are part of Honor's push to turn its flagship smartphone into a more capable long-range camera system.
Honor is taking smartphone photography into increasingly serious camera territory with two new external teleconverters that dramatically extend the reach of its flagship phone cameras.
The company has introduced the G500 telephoto converter and the smaller G200 telephoto converter alongside the Magic 9 Pro Max. The accessories are designed to attach to the phone's telephoto camera and provide substantially longer focal lengths than the smartphone's built-in optics.
The headline product is the G500, which reaches a 500mm-equivalent focal length. Honor is positioning it for subjects that are normally difficult to capture clearly with a conventional smartphone, including distant landscapes, sports, concerts and wildlife.
The 500mm G500 is the big attraction
The G500 is the more ambitious of Honor's two new teleconverters. It extends the Magic 9 Pro Max's native 85mm-equivalent telephoto capability by about 5.88 times, producing a 500mm-equivalent focal length.
Honor says the accessory can support photography at distances corresponding to as much as 14,000mm through the phone's combined optical and computational zoom capabilities. The company is particularly highlighting applications such as lunar photography and other extremely distant subjects.
A smaller 200mm option
Honor is also offering the G200, a much smaller teleconverter designed for users who want additional reach without carrying the much larger G500 setup.
The G200 measures about 81mm in length and weighs approximately 88 grams. Honor describes it as a portable option suitable for portrait close-ups and other situations where a moderate telephoto range is useful.
Unlike the G500, which is aimed specifically at the Magic 9 Pro Max, the G200 supports both the Magic 9 and Magic 9 Pro Max, giving it a broader role within the new flagship family.
The phone behind the lenses
The teleconverters are designed around the imaging hardware of Honor's Magic 9 Pro Max. The flagship features a dual 200-megapixel rear-camera system developed with ARRI, including a 200MP main camera and a 200MP ultra-night telephoto camera.
The telephoto camera uses a large 1/1.4-inch sensor, an f/2.6 aperture and an 85mm-equivalent focal length. Honor also says the camera offers CIPA 7.5-stop image stabilization, an important feature when working with extremely long focal lengths.
The main camera uses a 1/1.28-inch sensor with an f/1.57 aperture and gimbal-level stabilization rated at CIPA 8.0. Together, the camera hardware provides the foundation for the company's external-lens system.
Designed for distant subjects
Long telephoto lenses are useful because they allow photographers to fill more of the frame with subjects that cannot be approached easily. For smartphone users, this can be especially useful at sporting events, concerts, wildlife locations and outdoor landscapes.
Honor has also demonstrated the system with photographs of the Moon, the seashore and nighttime landscapes. The company says the G500 is particularly suited to lunar photography because of its extreme focal length.
However, a long focal length also magnifies camera shake. Stabilization and careful handling therefore become increasingly important as the optical reach increases. The physical size of a 500mm teleconverter also makes it fundamentally different from simply selecting a higher zoom level inside a smartphone camera app.
Smartphone cameras are becoming modular
Honor's approach reflects a broader change in premium smartphone photography. Manufacturers are increasingly using external accessories to extend the capabilities of cameras that are constrained by the limited physical space available inside a phone.

The trade-off is portability
The G200 demonstrates the practical side of Honor's strategy. At roughly 88 grams and 81mm long, it is designed to be carried more easily and used for everyday telephoto photography.
The G500 serves a different purpose. Its much longer reach is attractive to photography enthusiasts, but the additional hardware means users have to accept a larger and less conventional smartphone setup.
That creates a familiar camera-world trade-off: greater optical reach can provide new creative possibilities, but it usually comes with additional size, weight and handling requirements.
