Former Meta CTO Mike Schroepfer says Zuckerberg is operating with the urgency and intensity of a founder as Meta races to build its next generation of AI products, agents and hardware.
Mike Schroepfer, Meta’s former longtime chief technology officer and a current adviser to the company, says Mark Zuckerberg is operating in what he describes as “founder mode.” Schroepfer says Zuckerberg is pushing Meta with urgency as the company makes artificial intelligence the center of its next phase. The comments come as Meta expands its AI models, autonomous agents, smart glasses and other computing hardware.
Mark Zuckerberg has spent more than two decades building Meta from a social-networking startup into one of the world's largest technology companies.
Now, according to one of his former senior executives, Zuckerberg is approaching Meta's artificial intelligence race with the same intensity that characterized the company's earlier stages.
Mike Schroepfer, who served as Meta's chief technology officer for 13 years and continues to advise the company, described Zuckerberg's current leadership style as “founder mode” in a September 24, 2026 interview with Yahoo Finance.
What “Founder Mode” Means at Meta
Schroepfer used the term to describe a management approach centered on urgency, direct involvement and a strong focus on long-term goals.
In his account, Zuckerberg does not appear content to simply oversee a mature technology company. Instead, Schroepfer says the Meta founder continues to push employees to move faster and focus intensely on what the company needs to accomplish next.
Schroepfer described the approach as a way of injecting urgency into a large organization that could otherwise become comfortable with its existing success.
Schroepfer’s description of founder mode is less about a job title and more about maintaining urgency, direct involvement and a willingness to take major risks.
Zuckerberg Is Betting Meta’s Future on AI
Meta's current strategy makes artificial intelligence a central part of the company's future. Zuckerberg has increasingly focused on AI models, autonomous software agents, computing hardware and wearable devices.
Meta's own leadership information describes Zuckerberg as the company's founder, chairman and chief executive officer, with responsibility for its overall direction and product strategy.
The company is now pursuing a broader vision in which AI is not limited to answering questions inside a chatbot. Meta is developing systems intended to act more like persistent assistants while also connecting AI with wearable and spatial-computing products.
From Social Networks to Personal AI
Schroepfer said Meta is working toward a future in which billions of people could have AI systems working for them continuously.
His description points to a major shift in how technology companies think about personal computing. Instead of users opening individual applications to complete tasks, AI agents could increasingly perform tasks across services on their behalf.
That could eventually affect areas such as education, travel, productivity, shopping and personal organization. Schroepfer presented these possibilities as a vision for the future rather than as capabilities that have already been fully achieved.
Meta Is Also Building the Hardware Around AI
Meta's AI strategy extends beyond software. The company has continued investing in smart glasses and other wearable technologies as it explores new ways for people to interact with AI.
At Meta Connect on September 23, Zuckerberg presented new AI-focused products, including the Muse Charm and updated wearable devices. Meta also showcased new spatial-computing glasses aimed at combining AI capabilities with a lightweight computing platform.
The strategy suggests that Meta sees the next major computing platform as something broader than the smartphone. AI assistants could become increasingly embedded in devices people wear and use throughout the day.
Meta is increasingly treating AI as a platform that can connect models, agents, wearables and new forms of computing.
Schroepfer Has a Long View of Zuckerberg’s Leadership
Schroepfer is not an outside observer with limited knowledge of Meta. He spent 13 years working alongside Zuckerberg, helped build the company's engineering organization and was involved in major technology initiatives, including its AI research efforts and hardware expansion.
He left the CTO role in 2022 but remains an adviser to Meta. That relationship gives his comments particular context, while also meaning his perspective comes from someone who remains connected to the company.
His comments therefore represent his own assessment of Zuckerberg's leadership style rather than an official Meta description of its internal management culture.
“Founder Mode” Has Become a Broader Silicon Valley Idea
The phrase “founder mode” became widely discussed after entrepreneur and investor Paul Graham wrote about the concept in 2024. The idea generally describes a style of leadership in which founders remain deeply involved in products, decisions and company direction even after their businesses become very large.
Former Meta executive Fidji Simo has also written about the concept. She argued that founder-like behavior can be valuable beyond founders themselves and described Zuckerberg as someone who encouraged executives to take significant risks and personally drive important initiatives.
In that sense, the phrase is being used to describe a particular operating philosophy rather than a formal corporate position.
The Bigger AI Race
Meta is competing in an increasingly crowded AI market that includes companies such as OpenAI, Google and other major technology firms developing advanced models and autonomous agents.
The competitive landscape is also changing quickly. AI companies are moving beyond simple conversational systems toward agents capable of using tools, completing multi-step tasks and interacting with digital environments.
Meta's advantage comes partly from its enormous consumer platforms, advertising business, infrastructure and hardware ambitions. Its challenge is turning those assets into a coherent AI ecosystem while continuing to invest heavily in a rapidly changing field.
Meta’s next phase will depend not only on how capable its AI becomes, but on whether the company can turn those capabilities into products people actually use.
A Company Being Rebuilt Around AI
Zuckerberg's founder status gives him unusual influence over Meta's long-term direction. The company's current investments show that AI is no longer simply one project among many; it is increasingly tied to Meta's vision for the next generation of computing.
Schroepfer's description of “founder mode” offers one explanation for the intensity behind that transformation. Whether the strategy produces the expected technological and commercial results will depend on execution, competition, costs and how quickly consumers adopt the new products.
For now, the message from one of Zuckerberg's longest-serving technology leaders is clear: Meta's founder remains deeply focused on what the company becomes in the AI era.
Meta is entering another defining period in its history, and Zuckerberg’s continued hands-on approach places his personal vision directly at the center of the company’s AI transformation.
